Slither.io

Slither.io took the ancient mobile snake formula, injected it with massively multiplayer chaos, and somehow made it the most cutthroat arena on the web. You spawn as a tiny, vulnerable neon string, slurping up glowing pellets to gain mass. It seems peaceful at first, just a bunch of worms having a snack, until you realize every other player is a ruthless opportunist waiting for you to make a fatal mistake. The beauty of the game is the great equalizer: size doesn't give you invincibility. A colossal, screen-filling behemoth can still be instantly vaporized if a tiny upstart boosts in front of its face. This dynamic turns every session into a high-stakes game of chicken, where wrapping up opponents and feasting on their glowing remains is both intensely satisfying and a constant risk.

Editor's Note:There's nothing quite like the hubris of being the biggest snake on the server, only to get cut off and destroyed by a microscopic worm who spawned ten seconds ago.

Playing: Slither.io

How to play

Controls

  • Move your mouse cursor (or drag your finger on mobile) to steer your snake around the map.
  • Click and hold the left mouse button (or double-tap and hold on mobile) to trigger a speed boost.

Core rules

  • If your head touches another player's body, you die and turn into consumable orbs.
  • Using your speed boost continuously drains your mass, making you shrink the longer you hold it.

Goal

Survive, grow to become the longest snake in the arena, and claim the top spot on the server leaderboard.

Tips & tricks

The Coil Trap
Once you have enough length, find a smaller snake and encircle them completely. Slowly tighten the loop until they have nowhere left to turn, forcing them to crash into your body.
The Vulture Maneuver
When two massive snakes are fighting, hang back at the edge of the conflict. The second one of them crashes, immediately boost in to steal the dense clusters of glowing orbs before the winner can claim them all.
The Brake-Check
If a smaller snake is boosting aggressively parallel to you trying to get ahead, abruptly turn sharply towards them and release your boost. Often, their own momentum will carry their head directly into your side.
Center Map Scavenging
The center of the map is always a high-traffic warzone with massive orb drops. If you just spawned and are tiny, head straight for the center; you have nothing to lose and can easily grab mass from fresh casualties.

Why it’s fun

  • The sheer adrenaline rush of pulling off a tight maneuver to take down a player ten times your size.
  • Watching an absolutely massive rival explode into a galaxy of free food and sliding right through the loot pile.

FAQ

How do I change my skin in Slither.io?
On the main menu screen before you enter a match, click the 'Change Skin' icon in the bottom left corner to cycle through different colors, flags, and patterns.
Can I play Slither.io with my friends?
The base browser game randomly assigns servers, so it's difficult to meet up natively. However, many players use third-party browser extensions to input specific server IPs and play in the same arena.
Why is my game lagging so much?
Lag is usually caused by playing on a server far from your physical location or having a weak internet connection. Try clearing your browser cache or switching to a wired ethernet connection for smoother turning.
Does boosting make me lose points?
Yes, using your speed boost converts a portion of your length back into orbs that drop behind your tail. Use it sparingly during combat or escapes so you don't shrink too much.
Is there an edge to the map?
Yes, the arena is a giant circle surrounded by a red barrier. If you touch the red barrier, you will instantly die and your snake will vanish without dropping any consumable orbs.
